CHAPTER 9

“Alice! She’s not answering her phone,” stammered Anne Barnsley.

“Did you call the school?”

“I tried, but they said she was in class. I don’t believe it. Even if she couldn’t take the call because she was in class, Alice would text me to say she’d call me back. I’m terrified Fay has hurt her in some way.”

“Why would she do that?”

Anne shook her head.

“I don’t know. I don’t even want to think about it because it’s so awful,” she cried, clenching the steering wheel with her hands. “I just want my baby to be alright.”

She definitely knew more than she was willing to reveal, I realised. But was it something solid or was it just a suspicion?

“Can you go to the school and check on her?”

“Not without an appointment. I have to wait for her to call me back.”

“When did you last speak to her?”

“Yesterday morning. We were supposed to do a video chat this evening, but I’m worried about her, Sitara. What if Fay has hurt her?”

“If she had to hurt her, she would have done it long ago,” I pointed out.

“But she was so angry the day I brought her to you. What if she’s trying to prove she didn’t kill herself?”

“If she didn’t kill herself, who do you think killed her?” I asked gently. “You do suspect someone, don’t you?”

Anne shuddered and banged her head softly on the steering wheel.

“She’s not a bad child. She’s not mean and angry like Fay. I know she did her best to be kind to her, but she was heartbroken when Fay stole her story.”

I sat back in my seat, waiting for her to say it out loud.

“If she did do it - and I’m not saying she did - but if she did kill Fay, it must have been an accident,” she said desperately.

“When did you begin to suspect Alice?”

Anne glared at me and wiped her eyes angrily.

“Don’t say it like that! Suspect is an ugly word,” she cried. “It’s just that she was so sad about Fay’s death. I would have thought she’d be relieved the endless bullying was over for good. There was no love lost between them, so I knew she wasn’t grieving the way my husband was grieving. It was guilt, but I didn’t see what she had to be guilty about when Fay was the one who was in the wrong.”

“Did you know about the fight?”

Anne nodded.

“The head teacher told me about it the day it happened, and I was shocked because Alice has always been a timid child. I would never have expected her to lash out at Fay so openly. But I was glad she stood up to her. I only hope she didn’t take it too far. That’s partly why I put up with Fay when she began to haunt me. I didn’t want her to focus on Alice. I was happy to take the brunt of her anger as long as she left her sister alone.”

“Then why did you approach me?”

“Because I thought you could free us from her,” she said shakily.
